NicAlert Urine and Saliva Tests

Detects Secondhand Smoke Exposure

The NicAlert saliva and urine drug testing kit detects cotinine levels, the major metabolite of nicotine. Cotinine is the preferred marker for tobacco use because cotinine stays in the body much longer than nicotine. The presence of cotinine in saliva or urine is a reliable indicator for tobacco use within the past several days. Cotinine, with a half-life of 10-40 hours, has been shown to be more sensitive and specific than CO monitoring for measuring smoking status.

NicAlert Semi-Quantitative Smoking Test

The NicAlert nicotine test will detect six ranges of cotinine levels from 0 ng/ml through 2000+ ng/ml.

NicAlert can help:

  • Health care professionals to test for their patient’s exposure to tobacco smoke
  • Teachers and high school coaches to test high school athletes for smoking or other tobacco product use
  • To verify smoking status for insurance applications and smoking cessation programs
  • To test subjects in tobacco research studies

Saliva or Urine Nicotine Test

NicAlert can be used to test urine or saliva. Both mediums provide reliable methods for determining tobacco whether you choose the cotinine saliva test or the cotinine urine test.

Semi-Quantitative Results

NicAlert is the only nicotine test kit that gives semi-quantitative results. The presence of nicotine in saliva or urine creates a green colored band on the strip. Higher concentrations of nicotine cause the band to move higher on the strip. The test strip is divided into six zones to assist the collector in interpreting test results. High concentrations of nicotine indicate recent tobacco use or heavy, chronic use.

Level:Cotinine Equivalents (ng/mL)

For the nicotine urine test, result level 3 or above indicates the use of tobacco products.
For saliva nicotine test, result level 1 or above indicates the use of tobacco products.

Extremely sensitive to cotinine, the principle metabolite of nicotine, the NicAlert™ test will detect 6 ranges of cotinine concentrations from 0 ng/ml through 2000+ ng/ml.
