One of the most popular drugs with a high potential abuse in athletes and sports enthusiasts is ostarine, also known as enobosarm. Based on reports, the said drug has gained popularity for its anabolic effects on the muscles. According to the reviews of users, the drug has very similar results to steroids and prohormones.

Established in the year 1999, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) envisions a clean, drug-free sports all over the world. It is one of the primary organizations that monitors and resolves issues on drug abuse that athletes are involved to. In 2008, WADA has emphasized the potential abuse of selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM), where enobosarm and andarine belong to.

What is Enobosarm?

Enobosarm – with the full chemical name (2S)-3-(4-cyanophenoxy)-N-[4-cyano-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-propanamide – is a selective androgen receptor modulator developed by GTX Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in Memphis, Tennessee. It is also commonly known as S22, SARM S-22, and MK-2866, and was produced primarily to prevent or treat muscle wasting. Currently, GTX Inc. considers the drug as investigational and experimental for the treatment of breast cancer.

It basically targets and acts on androgen receptors, instead of converting to estrogen after entering the body. The androgen receptors, then, produce growth factors that boost protein synthesis in the body that would then result to increased lean muscle. Similar to anabolic steroids, the drug also increases nitrogen retention.

As it has significant effects on both muscle and bone tissues, it can be potentially used as medical treatment for atrophy, sarcopenia and cachexia, as well as for hormone replacement therapy, specifically testosterone.

Ostarine or enobosarm belongs to SARM, a chemical class that create anabolic activity with androgen receptors, and have been developed since the early 2000. Compared to  other anabolic steroids, SARMs do not have androgenic activity in non-skeletal muscle tissues. Legality of Enobosarm Use

In the United Kingdom and United States, enobosarm and most known SARMs can be legally purchased in the market. It can be used as part of a training regime, to specifically increase lean muscle mass gain in the bulking phase of the training program. For others, it is a reliable drug that boosts one’s capacity to maintain body structure and stamina over a short recovery period.

Enobosarm and other types of SARMs are prohibited among athletes, and have been listed under the WADA Prohibited List since 2008. The said list includes prohormones and steroids. For the general public, however, the drug is not illegal; only professional athletes are restricted to its use.

While all drugs classified as SARMs have been prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency because of their ability to artificially enhance one’s performance, the drug is not within the scope of the Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2014 (DASCA). Still, the Athlete Guide to the 2016 Prohibited List enumerates the substances they restrict, and enobosarm falls under the category S1 or those classified as anabolic agents.


People who are into sports should always remind themselves that there is no easy way to attain the goal of being good at their chosen craft. The point of doing sports, to begin with, is to challenge oneself to perform physical activities that would help become the best in the craft. There is a natural and fair way of being good at something; in sports, that is almost the case.

Athletes should always put in mind that using boosters or cheat pills is a sign of cheating — on themselves, on the sports they claim to love, and on the whole sporting community. Based on the number of reports related to abuse of certain drugs to enhance their performance, athletes are challenged with a stronger temptation to take the easy way to do things. In the real world, especially in sports, the easy way is most likely not the way that is worth the risk.

People who rely on drugs run the risk of getting caught and being disqualified from competitions — for the rest of their lives. While it gets tempting for people to try new things, one’s health should never be compromised. If common people should be reminded of the products they take in, athletes should be more cautious of what they choose to use as part of their training routines.
Athletes may have the best equipment, the best suits, the best training programs, but without a healthy body that is free from drugs that might have negative effects in the long run, they constantly put themselves in the greater possibility of losing.
